Josh was playing in the sand at the park. A bunch of bigger kids twice his age and size sauntered up and asked Josh if he wanted to participate in a foot race. From my spot on the bench I said under my breath, “Oh, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” I watched as all the kids lined up and one of them did “Go!” The pack took off and little 5 year old Josh pulled away fast. He sprinted across the field and waited a good three seconds for the one behind him. Then Josh just took off and began running laps by himself just for fun. The disgruntled winded kids walked back over to the park and glared at Josh. Josh lined up again. One of the kids said, “No way. Not racing you again.” Josh shrugged and went back to playing in the sand. They turned to Sammy seeing a more worthy adversary. “Hey, how about you?” Sammy just grunted and went back to playing. It’s easy to ignore a dare when you have nothing to prove.
